What a notary signing agent does in California
A signing agent is a commissioned California notary public who is trained to handle loan document packages. They print the package, meet the borrower where it suits them, verify identity, guide the signers through every page that needs a signature or an acknowledgement, notarize what the lender requires, and ship the executed package back to the title company the same day.
What to check before you book
- An active California commission. A notarization performed on an expired commission can invalidate the closing.
- Errors & omissions coverage. Most lenders require it, and the amount is listed on each profile here.
- Background screening and NNA certification. Standard requirements for signing services and title companies.
- Equipment. A dual-tray printer for legal and letter paper, and a high-speed scanner when scanbacks are required.
